Council’s event promotion fund welcomed by Mullingar Chamber

Mullingar Chamber of Commerce president Pat Whelan has welcomed Westmeath County Council’s event promotion and business initiative fund of €100,000 announced recently in their budget for 2013.

In the past, the question of potential commercial rate reductions have been discussed at length, wherein it has been pointed out that a standard rate reduction will give rise to unequal benefits between the local corner shop and the large multi-nationals.

In order to counteract this, Westmeath County Council has in the past provided direct support to business by way of event sponsorship etc. In this vein, a new event promotion and business initiative fund of €100,000, representing 1 per cent of the gross rate bill across the county (other than Athlone ), has been provided for within the budget for 2013.

This fund will be used to promote festival and events, and initiatives agreed with the business community, chamber of commerce, etc under the heading of business support.

The chamber president Pat Whelan and Mullingar Chamber of Commerce and the Mullingar marketing team look forward to working with Westmeath County Council in 2013, the year of The Gathering, on the promotion of Mullingar through events, festival, and business initiatives.
