Join the Native Woodland Trust for a guided walk of the Split Hills and Long Hill Esker Woodland on Saturday January 12 at 11am. These woods run along the famous Split Hills and Long Hill Esker located halfway between Tyrrellspass and Kilbeggan in County Westmeath. The wood is protected as a special area of conservation due to its unique and important woodland and wild flowers. This guided walk is free of charge and all are welcome. So come along to get some new year’s exercise and learn about this local natural gem.
Native woodland is very scarce in Ireland, and the Native Woodland Trust helps protect the little we have left by creating woodland nature reserves and increasing awareness of the importance of Irish native woodland. The Trust has recently started managing a beautiful native Westmeath woodland called Ardan Woods. They are protecting this site as a woodland nature reserve for the benefit of local wildlife and plant life and will be running educational walks on-site.
This Saturday’s walk will be in the nearby and similarly beautiful Split Hills Long Hill Esker Woodland. The walk will be about one hour in length and will be led by a Native Woodland Trust guide. It is a great opportunity to learn about your local woodlands and find out about the Trust’s work in Westmeath. If you are interested in trees and wildlife or you would just like to get out in the fresh air and have some fun then join in this family-friendly event.
The group will be meeting for this walk in Tyrrellspass at 10.50am on Saturday January 12 at the car park of the Tyrrellspass Castle Restaurant, and making their way from there to the woods.
