MEM Players perform Play On! - A play about theatre gone awry

Rick Abbot’s hilarious three act comedy Play On! will be staged from November 23-25 in Milltown Community Centre, Rathconrath, by the MEM Players.

The story centres around a struggling community theatre group. When offered a royalty-free play - Murder Most Foul - from new playwright Phyllis Montague, the group welcome the chance to put the theatre back into the black for the first time in years. The play follows the actors through the rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and finally the production of Murder Most Foul but unfortunately all does not go according to plan. During the performance, anything that can go wrong does, and the madcap curtain call makes for a hysterical climax.

The playwright, Phyllis, is writing a murder mystery about a mysterious and possibly cursed necklace - though the name of that necklace changes constantly as she writes and rewrites. Even on the day of the performance she makes some not-so-minor adjustments to the script.

This play is a new departure for the MEM Players and presents many complexities, with many of the cast having to flip between two accents as they play two characters - their character in the amateur theatre group and their character in the play staged by the group - Murder Most Foul.

Directed by Paul Curley, who is well known in amateur drama circles, the cast includes Celine Geraghty, Geraldine Kennedy, Mick Eviers, Margaret Igoe, Fiona Geraghty, Mick Molloy, Brian Crumm, Bernie McHugh, Mary Lynn, and Kate Dillon.

Admission is €10 for adults and €5 for students and children. Tickets available from: Rochforts, Mullingar; Halligan’s, Ballinacargy; and McCawley’s, Moyvore, or call Margaret on (087 ) 9428291 or Mary on (087 )6394247.
