A feast for the senses at Athlone Agri Show

The Made in the Midlands Food Village at the Athlone Agri Show promises to be an even greater feast for the senses this year with over 20 food stands supplying everything from goat’s milk ice-cream, Irish cheeses, local honey and vegetables, to organic venison burgers, local pork sausages, and delicious wholesome and speciality breads and cakes.

A new addition to this year’s show will be the Cookery Demo Kitchen sponsored by Flogas. There will be demos from Feargal O’Donnell of award-winning restaurant The Fatted Calf in Glasson, using local and seasonal produce; award-winning executive chef Kevin Ward from The Sheraton Hotel showing how to make your own chocolates at home; highly talented chefs from the ever popular Thai restaurant in Athlone, Kin Khao, will demonstrate how to make Pad Thai; and Liz Carey, the brilliant pastry chef from The Prince of Wales Hotel will be holding a baking demo entitled ‘Delicious Cakes’. Liz will take inspiration from her own garden for two of the cakes, with a delicious carrot cake and a courgette and lemon cake. Samples of everything demonstrated will be distributed at the end of each session.

Such is the demand for high quality local produce that an increasing number of food producers are really prospering during this time of economic recession, and our food and agricultural industry has emerged as our key strength over the past few years. The Made in the Midlands Food Village is a celebration of the amazing array of quality local food we have on our doorsteps and gives these producers a platform to share their enthusiasm with the wider public.

The Made in the Midlands Food Village is proudly sponsored by Westmeath County Enterprise Board, The Fatted Calf Restaurant in Glasson, The Prince of Wales Hotel in Athlone, Flogas, The Sheraton Hotel, and Athlone Nutrition Clinic.

Athlone Agri Show takes place on Sunday June 24 from 10am-6pm at Gaffey’s Field, Moydrum, Athlone. See www.athloneshow.ie for further information.
