No big surprises in round two of club championship

There were no big surprises in round two of the Westmeath senior football championship which took place last weekend. Castledaly were fancied by many to upset the odds against a new look Garrycastle side but the experience of the reigning champions was enough to see them through after a battle. In the end they had four points to spare with James Dolan’s goal sealing matters. Dessie Dolan once again pulled the strings for the men in red and green while Adam Kennedy marked his senior championship with a great performance at centre-back.

Elsewhere in division A Tyrrellspass helped themselves to a comfortable 2-13 to 0-6 win over Bunbrosna while Coralstown/Kinnegad earned the bragging rights with a two-point win over neighbours Killucan on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-5.

In division B Mullingar Shamrocks had far too much firepower for St Malachy’s and ran out easy 4-10 to 0-12 winners. Maryland picked up their second win at The Downs’ expense (1-12 to 0-8 ) while Athlone and St Loman’s shared the spoils in Cusack Park on Monday evening.

The third round is due to take place the week after Westmeath play the qualifiers so it depends on how the county side fare against Louth on June 30.
