Learn to sail at Lough Ree Yacht Club

Take advantage of the long summer evenings by signing up for this year’s adult sailing course at Lough Ree Yacht Club.

Established 1770, one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world, Athlone’s Lough Ree Yacht Club is running its Adult Sailing Course from 6.30pm to 9pm on six evenings, in May: Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23, Monday 28, Tuesday 29, and Wednesday 30.

The course also includes membership to Lough Ree Yacht Club for 2012.

All the instructors have many years experience and will encourage a fun, safe, enjoyable experience on the water.

The course will offer budding sailors a hands-on opportunity to learn the basics of sailing through theory in the clubhouse and on the lake sailing. Instructors will share their knowledge on topics including ropework, reading the weather, steering, setting the sails, and finally understanding wind direction.

At the end of each evening you will learn how to take down the sails and return to harbour under the tuition of the club’s excellent instructors.

When you have finished the course, you will have many opportunities to continue sailing as crew on the cruiser races from July to September and during the annual regatta July 30-August 5.

So why not round up a few friends and come and join the fun? The sailing course is open to adults of all ages and places are limited. The cost of the course is €150. Life jackets and sailing equipment will be provided. Students should dress warmly and bring a raincoat.
