Army Reserves to move to new base

It is expected that a suitable new base for the local Reserve Defence Forces in Mullingar will be finalised in the next few weeks, according to the Department of Defence.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed that alternative accommodation has been identified in the town to accommodate RDF training, and the necessary administrative arrangements are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

The local RDF had its base in Columb Barracks up until the barracks’ closure last month. The 130-plus members of the 54 Reserve Artillery Regiment vacated Columb Barracks on March 28, the same day as the 4th Field Artillery Regiment.

RDF members have not trained since the closure of the barracks a month ago.

It is understood that training will resume by early June, by which time the RDF will not have trained in up to two months.
