Fine for drunken behaviour after debs

While Judge Seamus Hughes isn’t familiar with a debs, he has read enough to know that plenty of alcohol is drunk on the night.

He made his comments at the recent sitting of Mullingar District Court where he imposed a €400 fine on a young man who was put off a bus at Robinstown on the way home from a debs.

Cian Hamilton (23 ), who is from 40 Riverside, Kilcoole in Wicklow was extremely irate with the driver of the debs bus at 5.20am on August 6 last year and was throwing paper at the driver as he drove.

Inspector Dermot Drea said his behaviour didn’t get any better when gardaí arrived, as he was abusive and offensive, refusing to give his details until gardaí found his passport.

He was completely uncooperative, the inspector said.

Patricia Cronin solicitor said her client, who is studying outdoor adventures, had too much to drink on the night, but the judge said this did not excuse his behaviour.

Hamilton denied taking cannabis or ecstasy, and answering the judge’s questions, Ms Cronin said his behaviour was uncharacteristic on the night.

Judge Hughes described it as “totally unacceptable” and said it’s a serious matter to throw papers at a driver and fined Hamilton for threatening, abusive behaviour.
