Last week Bernard Dunne and the Bród clubbers took to the streets of Athlone encouraging people to use their cúpla focal. Former world boxing champion Bernard Dunne is heading up an ambitious nationwide campaign which aims to inspire 100,000 people to re-engage with the Irish language. On his travels around the country Bernard was joined by racing pundit Tracy Piggott, iRadio presenter Barbara Nic Dhonnacha, and eurovision star Donna McCaul. They also visited Ballinasloe as part of the campaign.
“We’re now halfway through the Bród Club campaign and I am deeply encouraged by the huge level of support that I’ve received so far,” said Bernard Dunne. “With emails from Australia, Canada, and the US, to multi-trends on Twitter, to people on the streets all over Ireland using what Irish they have. It’s as simple as Dia duit, conas atá tú?, Go raibh maith agat. You don’t have to be fluent, just give it a go. You know more than you realise,” he said.
Figures released last week show that Westmeath people are showing their Bród and commitment to using whatever Irish they have to support Bernard Dunne’s Bród Club. County Westmeath is in division three on the Bród Club league table at number 18.
