Mullingar Area chairman angered at Minister “snub”

Chairman of the Mullingar Area committee Cllr Ken Glynn has expressed anger at Minister for Defence Alan Shatter’s refusal to meet with members to discuss the future of the military museum.

Following representation from members of the ‘Keep Columb Barracks Military Museum in Mullingar’ campaign, Cllr Glynn had written to the Minister to request a meeting. However he was less than pleased with the response he received this week.

“He has declined to meet us and instead has asked one of his officials to meet Mayor Peter Burke,” said Cllr Glynn.

“Firstly I must express my disappointment and disgust as it was the area committee and not the town council who sought the deputation; plus as chairperson I see it as a snub to my council area colleagues of all parties, and also the representatives of the museum committee who gave an excellent and detailed presentation last month which led us to seek the deputation.

“Did the Minister even read our letter?.....he is being political on this issue which is very much bigger than his pettiness. I regret that the Minister has treated the area committee with such contempt and [I] will continue to fight to retain the museum in Mullingar,” he concluded.
