Labour Party TD Willie Penrose has raised with Rural Affairs Minister Eamon O’Cuiv the progress on the replacement of Lyneen Bridge in County Longford.
Deputy Penrose said, “Minister O’Cuiv has told me that work on Lyneen Bridge, the last of the nine bridges required to facilitate the reopening of the Royal Canal, will be completed early next year.
“This is a very positive development, and means that work can now get under way on making the Royal Canal fully navigable. I understand that the Canal may well be fully open to recreational boats by 2010.
“As a member of the Royal Canal Amenity Group who has campaigned with my fellow members on the ground to have this important amenity reopened, I look forward to seeing it restored to full navigability and look forward to it opening up significant tourism and leisure job opportunities along the length of the canal.”
