The latest phase of EirGrid’s public consultation regarding plans for a new 110 kV electricity circuit to connect the existing Mullingar 110 kV Transmission Station at Irishtown and the existing Kinnegad 110 kV Transmission Station near Kinnegad Co Westmeath, is to commence this week.
EirGrid, a State owned company, charged with managing and operating the high voltage electricity transmission system, has, as outlined during their recent presentation to Westmeath County Council, been developing the most appropriate route for this project over the past two years.
The project is being developed to bring the electricity infrastructure in the area on a par with towns of a similar size across Ireland. Mullingar is currently supplied by just two 110 kV overhead lines, this proposed project will deliver a third circuit to supply power to the area. This is the standard security approach for a town of Mullingar’s size and without this circuit there is a risk to supply in the region.
When complete, this new 110 kV line will secure the electricity supply to Mullingar and the surrounding areas and will ensure the town has the adequate energy infrastructure in place when competing for inward investment.
According to Neil Keegan, EirGrid project manager, “This project is critical to ensure that Mullingar has a secure, safe supply of electricity. We are committed to delivering this project with the least impact possible and I would urge people to come along to our open days and speak with the project team regarding the proposed route and any observations they might have.”
