The hilarious, award winning musical The Producers has been on show at Mullingar Arts Centre since Wednesday last and will continue through until Saturday September 17.
The show, with a cast of 31 and over 200 outfit changes, is a musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks’ 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics written and music composed by Brooks and arranged by Glen Kelly and Doug Besterman.
As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. The humour of the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences and draws on an extremely wide range of jokes.
The original production opened on Broadway on April 19, 2001, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick and ran for 2,052 performances, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards. It spawned a successful London production running for three years, national tours, productions internationally, and a 2005 film version.
Sean Lynch, centre director of Mullingar Arts Centre said, “We are delighted to have such a fantastic show to kick off the season.”
“We also have a great line up of events planned over the next few months ranging from Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution to Julian Lloyd Webber.”
There are only a couple of days left to see The Producers; tonight Friday September 16 and Saturday September 17. The show kicks off at 8pm each evening and tickets are available at the door.
