Attendance, contrition, and €150 see charge struck out

A woman complimented for taking time out from the Galway Races to face public order charges, had her case struck out after she made a €150 contribution to the poor box at the year’s final sitting of the District Court last week.

Jennifer Brazier (28 ), with an address at Garnafaile, Athlone was arrested at a family gathering at her home on July 3 after gardaí were called to deal with a domestic dispute where she was highly intoxicated.

“I was highly offensive to the Guards and my mother,” said Brazier who defended herself.

“You’re very open and frank,” said Judge Seamus Hughes, who enquired as to what the defendant’s job was.

“I’m a scientist, and I didn’t use my head,” offered a rueful Brazier.

Judge Hughes asked with whom was she employed, but the defendant said she’d rather not say, and only admitted to working in Galway.

“Well, the fact that you took a day away from the Galway Races to come here...” said Judge Hughes. Noting she had no previous conviction, and giving credit for her honesty and contrition, he asked her to make a €150 contribution to the court’s poor box, and when she did, he struck out the charge.
