‘Those ruins are still charged with great mission’

Excitement is building at the ancient monastic centre of faith in Clonmacnois as hundreds of young people arrive from around the country for the annual Youth 2000 Summer Festival, which takes place this weekend from August 4 to 7. Two fields have been transformed into a tented village as a team of 30 volunteers prepared the site for the lively outdoor event for young Catholics.

Clonmacnois is a festival with a difference. Organised by young people for young people, the donation-only event for 16-35 year olds depends entirely on fundraising and donations to meet its costs. Volunteers from all over the country have worked around the clock to plan this year’s line-up and a mission team have toured the country doing publicity and promotion. There has been a fantastic response to their efforts with many young people attending for the first time, and the festival which began in 2008 looks set to further reinforce its standing as one of the most important and positive events for young Catholics in Ireland today.

The activity-packed weekend in Clonmacnois has something for everyone. There will be great music and a live concert with Elation Ministries, an opportunity to listen to inspiring talks and participate in dynamic workshops with young and diverse speakers. There will also be lots of time for walks to the monastic ruins, relaxing in the chill out cafe, taking part in games and activities, or simply for rest, reflection, and prayer. This year’s guest speaker Fr Bernard Murphy of the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, USA, well known for his inspirational preaching and infectious joy, has been eagerly looking forward to coming to Ireland for the festival.

Young people who come to Clonmacnois often comment on how uplifted they feel by the presence of so many of their peers witnessing to their faith in an atmosphere of real enthusiasm and joy.
