A Mullingar councillor is calling on Westmeath County Council to reduce the speed limit at Tallyho, off the N52, from 80kph down to 50kph.
The council has agreed to include the road in the next review of speed limits for the county, at the request of Cllr Aidan Davitt this week.
Cllr Davitt is concerned at the speed of motorists on the stretch of road leading to Lough Ennell Caravan Park, which is heavily used by walkers and visitors to the area.
“A lot of people walk to the lake, and the road is quite narrow. You can do 80kph at the moment, and we have to decrease this, especially with the numbers of tourists going to the lake,” said Cllr Davitt.
Director of services said the speed limit would be examined in the context of the council’s policy document on speed limits, and of criteria including the volume of traffic on the road.
