Tesco Mullingar goes electric for ERP Be Free recycling event

Participate for the chance to win tickets for Electric Picnic

Tesco is hosting a special ERP Be Free recycling day in the car park of their Mullingar store on Saturday August 6. The event, which is free for all members of the public wishing to recycle their unwanted electrical items and batteries, will take place from 10am to 4pm, with ERP staff on hand to help you unload.

ERP, Ireland’s only pan-European compliance scheme for electrical and electronic waste and waste battery recycling, will be celebrating their association with Electric Picnic 2011 with a draw for weekend festival tickets for those who bring along at least 10 items.

Commenting on the upcoming event, Martin Tobin, CEO of ERP Ireland said “Westmeath residents recycled over 37 tonnes of electrical waste last year and have a great reputation in responsible recycling. We are delighted to be working with Tesco Mullingar in hosting this event and we are encouraging people to come along and dispose of their old electrical items and used batteries.”

‘Tesco is proactive in making sustainability an integral part of its business and actively encourages its customers to be environmentally aware. We are looking forward to working with ERP on raising awareness of electrical waste recycling and diverting such waste from landfill” added Kieran Rushe, store manager at Tesco in Mullingar.

Those buying new electronic items can also return their old items free of charge at electrical retail outlets (as long as the items are of equivalent type ) and used batteries can be recycled for free at your local retailer selling similar batteries. Those unable to make it along on Saturday can recycle their household electrical waste and waste batteries for free at the Civic Amenity Recycling Centres in Mullingar Business Park and Golden Island, Athlone.

To celebrate ERP’s involvement with Electric Picnic, they have launched a competition calling on budding artists and designers to recreate cultural iconic structures, be they local, national or international, out of electrical waste and waste batteries. The winning designs from each category will be brought to life by the winning artists under the watchful eye of acclaimed artist Christy Collard and will then take up residence along the esteemed Electric Picnic arts trail.
