Motor cycle racing to take over the roads this weekend

This weekend will see the Specials.ie Race of the South at Walderstown Athlone take to the roads.

This race is a round of the Irish championship and will see a number of TT stars take to their bikes in the hopes of going home with the top prizes. Top name riders who will be competing include TT star Michael Dunlop and his brother William, Adrian Archibald, Davy Morgan, and Michael Pearson, who will be taking part in the event for the first time.

There are also a number of well known local competitors taking part in the race; Damien Horan from Athlone, Noel Brennan from Kilbeggan, and Derek McGee from Mullingar are sure to have plenty of support along the route.

The roads will be closed on Saturday, July 9 from 12.30pm for practice and on Sunday July 10 from 11am, with the first race getting underway at 11.15am in an 11 race program. There is a total prize fund of €22,000 for the event with the winner of the Grand Final winning €3,000.

The organisers would like to thank all the residents and Gardaí in Moate and Athlone, Westmeath County Council, local land owners and sponsors, and all who helped in any way.
