Championship preparations continue for senior footballers

Westmeath senior footballers will find out this weekend who their opposition will be in their opening championship game on June 4.

Pat Flanagan’s men are due to play the winners of Offaly and Wexford who meet this weekend. I have a gut feeling that Offaly will prevail this weekend and if that is the case then Westmeath will enjoy home advantage on June 4.

Preparations have been hotting up in recent weeks with a number of challenge games against Armagh, Meath, and Galway. Results haven’t been going our way but the only result that will matter is on June 4.

The final challenge game is taking place tomorrow (Saturday ) at 2pm against neighbours Roscommon to mark the opening of a new stand and training facilities in Ballyfarnon.

It looks likely from recent games that the talented John Heslin will line out at full forward rather than his more familiar midfield. Darragh Daly looks to have secured one of the midfield berths with David Duffy, Denis Corroon, and Brendan Murtagh fighting it out for the other spot.
