Westmeath urged to share a happy thought

New research finds 80 per cent of young people say we need to be more upbeat nowadays

O2 and Headstrong, the National Centre For Youth Mental Health, this week launched a social campaign that will see O2 donate €200,000 to support youth mental health. Entitled Share a Happy Thought and part of the wider Think Big programme, the campaign is calling on Westmeath to share a happy thought on o2thinkbig.ie, Twitter, or Facebook and O2 will donate €1 to Think Big for every happy thought shared.

Think Big is a programme designed by O2 and Headstrong that enables young people to do projects in their community that will help make a difference to young people’s mental health. The Share A Happy Thought campaign aims to raise awareness for Think Big to ensure more and more projects get underway around the country.

New research released to coincide with the launch of the Share a Happy Thought campaign suggests that it will be well received and young people welcome the opportunity to get involved, with 90 per cent of them claiming that they would be likely to share a happy thought with someone they love. Some 80 per cent of respondents said that people need to be more upbeat nowadays and 63 per cent said that the current economic situation in Ireland gets them down.

When asked who they would share their happy thoughts with, best friends (30 per cent ) and boyfriends/girlfriends (29 per cent ) are the most likely recipients, however interestingly one in every five young people polled would send a happy thought to their parents.
