Athlone estate must wait to see who pays for its speed ramps

Plans of the local authority to take Cloghanboy estate in charge were adjourned for at least a month after a councillor raised a question about whether the developers had promised to install speed ramps.

The estate, which is just off the Ballymahon Road opposite the Two Mile, and which also incorporates the Sonas retirement village, was on the agenda of this week’s monthly meeting of Athlone County Council to be taken in charge.

However, 12-year veteran of the chamber, Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran raised issue with pursuing this on Monday evening, as he believed the council had an agreement with the construction firm of Ollie Kenny Ltd to install speed ramps.

“If we [the council] take it in charge, they’ll never get it done,” he declared.

He was supported by former party colleague Cllr Kieran Molloy, who asked if this was one of the original conditions of its planning permission, and that if it was “they have to go in”.

Neither area engineer Alan Kelly nor director of services for Athlone, Barry Kehoe could confirm or deny this supposition, and so any decision on the formal adoption of this estate by the local authority was adjourned until at least the April meeting to allow the Executive to clarify the situation
