First steps for secondary Educate Together school in Mullingar

The first tentative steps have been taken towards the establishment of an Educate Together secondary school for Mullingar.

The Mullingar Educate Together Secondary School Action Group held their inaugural meeting on Thursday last week in the local Educate Together primary school at Rathgowan, Mullingar.

A groups of parents and interested parties attended the meeting, where they discussed strategy, demographics, parental choice in education, and the perceived support from various political parties.

A follow-up meeting will be held on March 31 at 8pm in the Mullingar Educate Together NS, Rathgowan. All are welcome, and the group would be delighted to hear from any other interested parents. Interested parties are also encouraged to email [email protected] expressing their interest.

Educate Together schools are community-led initiatives which are multi-denominational, co-eductional, and democratically run.

There are 52 Educate Together primary schools in Ireland, including the one in Mullingar which has almost 300 pupils. There are applications in place for a number of second level schools across the country.

“The process is to engage with the local community and set up a local awareness campaign. Then we get people to register their interest and we go to the Department of Education. The Mullingar group is in its very early days,” explained Educate Together’s head of communications John Holohan, who encouraged inerested parties to attend the upcoming meeting on March 31.
