House fire claims life of Moate pensioner

An investigation is under way into a house fire which claimed the life of a 65-year-old man in Moate this week.

Moate native Noel Jones died after a fire broke out in his house at Weaver’s Row, Moate, at around 1pm on Monday. He was the only person in the house at the time, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The scene was examined by the Garda scenes of crime investigation unit. A postmortem is being carried out at Tullamore Hospital, and Gardai are not treating the fire as suspicious.

Mr Jones, who was 65 and a bachelor, lived alone in his house at Weaver Row, where his sister also lived a few doors away.

Moate’s Cllr Tom Allen said Mr Jones was “a nice quiet man” who was very well known and liked around Moate.

“He was a nice quiet man who was a native of the town, born and reared here.. His sister lives a couple of doors away and used to be in and out to him, and his brother also lives in Moate too.

“It is very sad coming up to Christmas, and my sympathies go to Noel’s family,” he said.
