Visitors to Mullingar next month should be able to enjoy at least two weekends of free parking in the run-up to the Sseasonal madness, the Executive confirmed at this week’s monthly meeting of the local area committee.
This was revealed in reply to a question from Cllr Ken Glynn when he sought to see if the council could “give something back” to the people of Mullingar in this regard, as had been similarly offered over a number of previous Christmases.
In reply, a spokesperson for the Executive said she could see no reason why this could not be implemented, but that no specific dates had yet been decided upon.
It is expected that, pending departmental consultation and approval, the county council will allow free parking on the last two Fridays and Saturdays before Christmas, which would cover the weekends of December 10-11, and 17-18. If this is indeed decided upon, notification will be then sent to the local press.
This initiative is separate from Cllr Ruth Illingworth’s failed effort at the last meeting of the town council to adjust the parking bye-laws in town to allow an additional two hours of free parking in Mullingar every morning between 9.30 and 11.30.
