Irish charity Fighting Blindness, as part of a drive to advance research and expand its professional counselling services, will hold a collection in Harbour Place Shopping Centre, Mullingar tomorrow, Saturday November 6.
The charity is calling on the people of Westmeath to lend their support as volunteers and to help with fundraising efforts to continue its ground-breaking research and to fund its unique counselling service for people with visual impairments and their families.
Volunteers will assist with collections and distribute information about the services available for anyone affected by a visual impairment.
Fighting Blindness regional fundraising coordinator, Deirdre Keaveney said, “Fighting Blindness has had great support from the people of Westmeath over many years and we’re delighted to be here on November 6 to launch a fundraising drive.
“Blinding conditions such as age related macular degeneration (AMD ), diabetic retinopathy and genetic forms of blindness affect many people in Westmeath and throughout the country. We’re on the brink of a breakthrough but need more funding to reach our goal of making treatments available to patients. The money raised will bring real hope to people living with sight loss while providing much needed psychological support to those losing their sight.”
To coincide with this collection, the charity is encouraging volunteers to organise their own coffee morning, pub quiz, book sale, jeans day at work or other fundraising activity in their local area to help raise awareness and important funds. The fundraising team at Fighting Blindness can help with fundraising ideas and provide any materials needed to ensure a successful event.
