A man who pleaded guilty to assaulting his now estranged wife and a man who was with her has escaped conviction on payment of a €300 charity contribution.
Kevin Coyne of 15 Ashcroft Park, Raharney admitted engaging in what Inspector Fergus Treanor described as “a fairly savage attack”.
Inspector Treanor said that on June 6 Coyne had been out for a drink with his estranged wife at a pub in Rathwire but when he was about to go home, he’d been unable to find her.
When he did find her in the company of another man, he attacked them both and punched and kicked them several times. He also kicked his wife.
Mr Robert Marren said the situation was unfortunate and that his client’s plea of guilty prevented “the airing of facts that are better off out of the public domain”.
He said his client was a hard-working man and the incident had signalled the end of the marriage. His brother had also died tragically in recent times, Mr Marren said.
He asked if the charitable payment could go to the Irish Heart Foundation.
