Judge no amused by defendants behaviour

Judge John Lindsay was unimpressed with the behaviour inside and outside the courtroom of a Mullingar man who appeared before him at the recent sitting of Mullingar District Court.

“Do you think there’s something funny about all this?” he asked 24-year-old Kevin McDonagh of 22 Grange Heights.

“Not really,” replied McDonagh, who was facing charges of threatening behaviour and drunkenness.

“I can tell you there isn’t. So whoever you’re smiling at behind you, I suggest you cut it out,’ warned the judge, which prompted solicitor Patricia Cronin to warn her client to keep looking forward.

McDonagh pleaded guilty to being drunk and abusive outside the courthouse in Mullingar on October 8.

He admitted to calling Garda Doyle “a p***k”. Ms Cronin said the 24-year-old who is unemployed and has a difficulty with alcohol, was off alcohol while on medication but when that prescription ended a month ago he began drinking again.

His 19 previous convictions are alcohol related, she said.

He was given a three month sentence for threatening behaviour which was suspended for 18 months.
