It has been announced that €50,000 in funding has been secured by the RAPID committee for a new youth cafe to be opened in Spoutwell Lane, Mullingar.
The cafe will be an exciting, new, safe place for young people to spend time with friends. More funding has already been guaranteed by Westmeath County Council, Westmeath Community Development, and Pobal.
The youth cafe has been a much needed service in Mullingar for a while now. “The funds should be made available in March and April, so the unit should be up and running in the new year,” according to Cllr Aidan Davitt, who announced the funding following a meeting of the Mullingar Area RAPID committee on Wednesday, at which it was recommended that Pobal give €50,000 in funding towards the cafe.
This youth cafe will be a welcome addition to the Spoutwell area, providing facilities for the town’s youngsters. A lot of people are concerned about the youths of the area, so much so that over 600 people signed a petition to get the cafe, said Cllr Davitt. There are many people interested and it is a longed-for facility in Mullingar, he added.
The cafe will provide a safe environment for youths to socialise and enjoy with friends. It will offer a variety of facilities such as internet access, televisions, video players, computer games, pool tables, and many more.
Although not a job creation project, a number of people will be involved to help with the smooth running of the cafe. In total it will cover approximately 3,000 sq ft.
