Jeep jumper missed son’s first Christmas - court hears

A man who leapt from the rear of a jeep to evade gardaí, has been given an eight month suspended sentence at Mullingar District Court.

Dylan Lester of 6 Brookview Close, Tallaght was a passenger in the jeep which was stopped by gardaí at New Down, The Downs on June 9 last year.

The 21-year-old exited through the back of the jeep, screaming and shouting, and acting in a threatening manner, and pushing a garda as he did so.

A stolen anvil and a saddle were found in the back of the jeep which Lester was charged with handling.

With 26 previous convictions, Lester missed his son’s first Christmas as he was in prison and his partner is expecting their second child this Christmas.

Ms Patricia Cronin said the steel worker hasn’t come to Garda attention and he got his job while he was in custody and is now on temporary release.

He has turned around his life, she said and suggested that the judge impose a penalty that would hang over him.

Judge David Anderson sentenced Lester to eight months in jail but suspended it for two years on condition he is not convicted of any theft offences in that time.
