Judge puts a price on late-night chipper behaviour

A judge in the District Court this week (September 22 ) put a cost on being drunk and disorderly in public after a man pleaded guilty to two public order offences in Moate.

The court heard how gardai were called to attend to a fracas outside Supermacs on the Main Street in Moate at 3.20am on June 7, 2009 and had to arrest Kevin Adamson (20 ) of Ardgréine, Moate.

“Gardai saw the defendant strike another male. He was very drunk,” said Inspector Nicholas Farrell.

“He accepts he had too much to drink, judge, and he has very little recollection of the night,” said defending solicitor, Mr Padriag Quinn, who went on to point out his client had a full-time job and had no previous convictions.

“How drunk do you have to be to be like this outside Supermacs at 3.20am, Mr Quinn?” Judge David Anderson asked.

“I don’t know, judge,” said Mr Quinn.

After a moment’s thought, the judge turned to Mr Quinn and said: “That hour outside Supermacs has just been priced at €400”.

Mr Quinn, who had asked for the Probation Act, asked for a month to come up with this charitable donation. The judge adjourned his decision until October 27, where Adamson can expect the Probation Act if he has made his €400 donation by then.
