Delvin crowned Westmeath intermediate hurling champions

Delvin 2-08

Fr Dalton’s 1-10

Delvin are celebrating this week after capturing the intermediate hurling crown by the narrowest of margins at the expense of a plucky Fr Dalton’s side last Sunday. The opening half was keenly contested with the winners bagging two goals to give them a 2-3 to 1-4 half-time lead.

After the break Delvin grabbed control and built up a commanding six point lead. The men from Ballymore were not going to lie down however and gradually began to claw their way back.

Even with an additional eight minutes of injury time Fr Dalton’s clearly needed a goal if they were to be victorious. Having squandered a number of good goal scoring opportunities Fergus Shaw, who started at corner back, fired over three late points to leave just the minimum between the sides. Try as they might they couldn’t grab the equaliser they so badly needed and it was the men from the valley who hung on to record a famous victory. Both sides deserve credit for the great entertainment they served up at the ridiculous time of 1pm on All-Ireland football final day.
