Westmeath people who were prosecuted for not paying their TV licence on time will have to act quickly to pay fines imposed by Judge Patrick McMahon at the recent sitting of Mullingar District Court.
He imposed fines equal to the amount of money due to An Post, based on evidence given by the TV licence inspector who visited homes across Westmeath in November and December last year.
Patricia Gilchrist, 11 New Glenview, Castlepollard owes €638 and has had no licence since September 2006 when she was visited by the TV licence inspector in November last year.
She was given three months to pay her debt to An Post and will spend 45 days in jail if she does not.
He refused to give more than three months to Glenda Duff of 5 Killucan Manor Crescent, Killucan who asked for six months to pay €280 as she is not working and is not on social welfare.
He also refused to give any more than three months to Imelda Murray, 12 New Glenview, Castlepollard who is responsible for a loss of €173 to An Post when she had no licence.
PJ Pilkington, 2 The Weir, Marketpoint, Mullingar who did not appear in court was given 28 days to pay €160 and will spend 15 days in jail if the money is not paid over.
On the other hand, Julie Loftus, 66 Rahanine Manor, Rochfortbridge who was in court and asked for five or six weeks to pay €160 was given three months to pay the fine of the same amount.
However John Joyce of 8 Lakeland Drive, Mullingar was one of a number of people who had paid arrears or backdated their licence and cases against them were struck out.
