A man who was drunk and disorderly in Mullingar has been given a chance to make a charity payment to avoid a criminal conviction.
Colm Montgomery of Slieveboy, Castlepollard was drunk and fighting in the middle of the Dominick Street near a taxi rank.
Inspector Jarlath Folan said a witness observed the 21-year-old “hit his girlfriend a slap”.
Mr Robert Marren said his client was drunk “and there was a row and then another row”.
He is not working and earns €100 per week.
Judge Patrick McMahon ordered that he pay €100 to Goal within two weeks to get the benefit of the Probation Act or he would get two months to pay fines totalling €600.
“If I was him, I’d pay the hundred,” he advised.
