All-Ireland crown for minor hurlers

Niall O’Brien was the hero of the day as his haul of 2-7 propelled Westmeath’s minor hurlers to their first All-Ireland B title since 1999. The Lake County men had three points to spare over Kildare on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-12.

Pat O’Brien’s young charges enjoyed a two-point lead at the break and led by seven points with five minutes remaining. The Lilywhites to their credit refused to lie down and struck 1-1 in quick succession to cut the defecit to just three points. However it was too little too late and the young Westmeath men hung on to cap a great year for hurling in the county.
