Trucker hurt as lorry sheds load on N4

A lorry driver was seriously injured in an accident that closed one lane of the N4 dual carriageway for six hours outside Mullingar last Monday August 16.

The driver, from the Newry area, was brought to the regional hospital in Mullingar suffering from broken ribs and a fractured back, and was transferred to the orthopaedic centre of excellence in Tullamore on Tuesday where his condition is described as serious but stable.

The accident occurred a few hundred metres after the Mary Lynch’s junction on the westbound carriageway at lunchtime, when the curtain-sided articulated lorry from Surefreight in Newry, Co Down left the road and shed its load of cut timber.

Gardai closed the left hand lane as the emergency services took the injured driver from his overturned cab, and over the next few hours a selection of local contractors, the county council’s fast response crew, and a number of dispatched Surefreight vehicles attempted to salvage as much as they could of the cargo before Gardai re-opened the road at 7pm.

At present, no cause of the accident has been ascertained and Gardai in Mullingar would like to hear from anybody who witnessed it to call them on (044 ) 9384000.
