Youth threatened to slit garda’s throat - court hears

A youth who was aggressive and mooned at gardaí has had his bail revoked and is now in custody.

Garda David Hannan gave evidence at the recent vacation sitting of Mullingar District Court that on two occasions the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, failed to comply with bail set out by the court.

While he was supposed be at home on curfew between 10pm and 8am, he was not at home at 1.20am on July 24 when gardaí called.

On July 27 when gardaí arrived at around 1.30am he was drunk in his garden and shouted at gardaí. He threatened to slit Garda Hannan’s throat and exposed his backside to the garda. He made so much noise that neighbours woke up.

A condition of his bail is that he not be under the influence of alcohol. He is on bail for offences including assault causing harm, criminal damage, and public order breaches.

The boy’s mother told the court that he had fallen asleep at a friend’s house on the first night and on the second, described his behaviour as out of character.

On that night she said he was “completely out of control”.

“He shocked me,” she said.“It was as if he was on something.”

She said he had been getting hassle from a certain member of the Gardaí, not Garda Hannan, and he just “lashed out”.

“Something else took over,” she said.

Inspector Kieran Keyes said he accepted the woman was doing her best but her son was out of control and his behaviour was “giving two fingers to society and to the Gardaí”.

The woman became upset as she accepted that she could not control her son.

In the witness box the boy apologised for his behaviour and said he would stick to his bail if given it again. He did not want to go to St Pat’s, he said.

Judge David Anderson said the boy was out of the control of his parents and revoked his bail and refused bail on a new criminal damage charge.
