In light of the grim financial circumstances in which many local people find themselves, Mullingar town councillor Ken Glynn is calling on the Government to introduce a system whereby car tax could be paid on a monthly basis.
The Fianna Fáil councillor believes the move would make life easier for the thousands of car-owners across the county, who currently have no option but to pay motor tax on a quarterly, biannual, or annual basis.
“Something should be done to look at this. Car tax is expensive, a lot of people are struggling,” said Cllr Glynn at this week’s meeting of Mullingar Town Council.
“It is a bill every household faces if they have a car in their driveway, and from a council point of view it would mean regular income on a monthly basis.”
While county manager Dan McLoughlin suggested it appears to be the Government’s hope that over time everyone should move to the newer tax regime, Cllr Glynn pointed out that anyone driving a car registered up to the year 2009 falls within the old tax brackets.
