A €1.2 million extension plan for the Athlone Regional Sports Centre got the green light this week when councillors agreed to commence the planning process for the expansion of facilities at the centre.
Extra changing rooms and over 140 square metres of additional gym space are among the developments to be included in the proposed extension. A small part of the existing coffee shop and the external balcony are to be incorporated into the extended gym.
Town clerk John Walsh explained that, of the estimated €1.2 million cost of the project, a grant of €650,000 has already been secured, while the remainder will come from the centre itself, estimated VAT refunds of €200,000, and some borrowing.
Cllr Mark Cooney, who sits on the sports centre board, said he was “very happy” to propose the plans.
“This has been quite a while in gestation, and the design will move the sports centre forward. It is a very current facility. We must take into account the competition out there and ensure it retains its status in Athlone and the region.”
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, who said the proposed extension shows Athlone is moving forward. “We have been criticised for the level of activity in the town, but this proves we are moving forward,” he said, citing the art gallery developments as further evidence.
“It goes to show we are not stagnant, we are moving forward,” added Cllr Gabrielle McFadden, referring to earlier suggestions during the debate on tall buildings that Athlone would remain stagnant without such a development.
Cllr Aengus O’Rourke said the sports centre constantly strives to provide the very best of facilities.
“It is very well managed, and there is a very proactive board. I regularly visit with my children, and it is very well run. I would like to compliment the ambition shown by the centre.”
