Roscommon will relish underdog tag in Connacht final

(Roscommon v Sligo, Castlebar 4pm, Sunday)

All roads lead to Castlebar on Sunday as Roscommon bid to win their first Connacht title since 2001. On that occasion they were captained by Fergal O’Donnell, the man who will be patrolling the sideline this time around.

Indeed O’Donnell and his team must be delighted with the way they are entering this year’s decider. All of the talk is about Sligo and there is a belief that all they have to do is turn up on Sunday and the title will be theirs.

True, Sligo have the better form coming into the game, having accounted for both Mayo and Galway en route to the final. Roscommon beat London and Leitrim and have shown steady improvement.

While Sligo deserve to wear the favourites’ tag it remains to be seen how comfortably that sits with them. One thing for sure is that Roscommon will not fear the Yeats men.

Roscommon will need to play above themselves and hope Sligo have an off day if they are to be celebrating on Sunday evening. Yet with all the pressure and expectation on Kevin Walsh’s men, Roscommon are not without a chance.
