Jail sentence for obstructing garda

A man who was threatening and aggressive to the same garda twice within the space of a month has been given a four month sentence for obstruction.

Adam Cleary of Riverside Lawns, Kinnegad had 11 previous convictions when he came before Mullingar District Court charged with offences which occurred in September and October of last year.

On the first day Garda John Daly was dealing with an incident in Kinnegad when Cleary and a group of other males became aggressive and belligerent to him. The garda asked them to leave but Cleary told his companions “not to f***ing mind him”. He then threw a carton of food he was eating at the garda’s feet.

When an attempt was made to arrest him, he broke free.

Just three weeks later gardaí were called to deal with a group of disorderly youths in the town and when Garda Daly approached Cleary and his two companions, he threw a bottle at him, missing him. He was pursued, but managed to wriggle out of his shirt and get away. He was later caught.

His previous convictions relate to driving offences including dangerous driving, failing to appear in court and trespassing.

The 20-year-old is currently serving nine months detention at St Patrick’s Institution for having no insurance.

Mr Louis Kiernan said his client knew he needed to mature, that he was abusing alcohol and had gotten involved with the wrong group of peers.

He wanted to apologise to Garda Daly and knows that if he stays away from alcohol, this will help him.

He was placed in detention for four months for obstructing Garda Daly in October and for refusing to leave the area when requested in September.
