Fun for all ages

A group of representatives from active retired groups from the east and west coasts of Ireland were invited by Bloomfield House Hotel on a familiarisation trip to Mullingar recently.

Co Westmeath Tourism Ltd co-ordinated a day trip itinerary to showcase the fantastic attractions in the local area. The group visited Locke’s Distillery Museum, Belvedere House and Gardens with a very enjoyable tour given by general manager Bartle D’Arcy. Blessed with beautiful sunshine and stunning views of Lough Derrvaragh and the rolling countryside, the group travelled to north Westmeath in the afternoon to Tullynally Castle where owners Thomas and Valerie Pakenham greeted the group.

At Fore Abbey, Jane and PJ O’Reilly provided a hearty welcome. A visit to Mullingar Greyhound Stadium rounded off a very successful day and even produced a few winners for the group! “The trip was a collaborative effort between Bloomfield House Hotel, Co Westmeath Tourism Ltd, and the local attractions. It is fantastic to see our tourism providers working together to attract business. In the overseas market, nearly half (47 per cent ) of overseas visitors to the East and Midlands region in 2008 were over 45 years. Holiday trips by those aged 50 plus in Ireland has grown, reflecting a trend towards increasing age in the domestic holiday market. The active retired market is a very important market for Westmeath and through this familiarisation trip we had the opportunity to showcase the county, its great attractions, and superb central location,” said Rhona Rogers, Westmeath Tourism Development Officer. “Feedback from the group was very positive with many intending to make return visits with their groups to the area,” she added.
