Hit-and-run accused to be tried in public next month

A man involved in a hit and run incident over Christmas will have to face the music in public next month after he failed to have his case heard in private on account of the “sensitive” nature of the case.

Conor Kelly (28 ), Tigan Beg, Mount Temple, Moate is charged with hit-and-run, dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to remain, and failure to report the alleged incident at Fardrum on December 28.

In court this week, Kelly’s solicitor Dara Hayden handed in a number of doctors’ letters to Judge David Anderson and applied to have the case heard in camera on account of what he claimed were “mental health issues”.

After some perusal, the judge believed he could not accede to this request.

“This application has got nothing to do with the state of his mind but with the sensitive matters of the incident. I won’t. I can’t,” said the judge, before remanding Kelly on continuing bail, to re-appear at Athlone District Court on July 7.
