Cllr Ken Glynn has welcomed the launch of the Incremental Purchase Scheme, which came into effect this week.
The scheme will allow council tenants and those on housing waiting lists with incomes from €15,000 a year to buy a new house at a discount of between 40 and 60 per cent of the listed price on the open market.
Cllr Glynn expressed his delight at this new scheme, saying it offers hope to so many people on low incomes who want to get on the property ladder.
“It will allow people on the council waiting list an opportunity to buy their own home and remove the stress of having to worry about when they would receive housing from the local authority,” he said.
Cllr Glynn also welcomed the fact that the scheme will allow the department to recycle monies attained from purchases back into the provision of additional social housing in the future.
“Minister Finneran’s announcement will give great hope, and is a boost to those who will now have an opportunity to purchase their own home,” he added.
