Athlone artist is a winner

Student artist Daniel Henry (5 ) who is a pupil at St Joseph’s PS, Athlone pictured with his painting entitled ‘Watermelon Delight’ which won him second prize and a cheque for €125 in the six years and under age category in this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

Now in its 56th year, the Texaco Children's Art Competition began life in 1955 and is the longest running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland. Past winners include artists Bernadette Madden, Dorothy Cross, Graham Knuttel and Robert Ballagh, fashion designer Paul Costello, broadcasters Thelma Mansfield and Terry Prone, ICTU General Secretary David Begg, politician Ruairi Quinn, novelist Clare Boylan, actress Jean Anne Crowley, and musician Ethna Tinney.

This year, the competition attracted just under 30,000 entries with students from all of the 32 counties taking part. Chairman of the judging panel was Professor Declan McGonagle, director of the National College of Art & Design.

The presentation of prizes takes place in Dublin next month.
