A teenage boy, who went armed with a knife to the home of another young male, has been refused bail at Mullingar District Court.
The youth, who is charged with possession of the knife which was covered in his own blood when he approached the house in Mullingar, had wanted to “sort out” an issue over a girl, the court heard.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had caused injuries to himself and had a long bandage the length of his left forearm when he appeared before Judge David Anderson. He had been seen by a doctor and had received stitches after his arrest.
Garda Eric Naughten told the judge how the incident had happened at 7.45am on Thursday morning April 8, while the Leaving Cert student was on holidays.
The garda had responded to a 999 call and found the 17-year-old with blood on his clothes at the address where the incident took place.
While not from the immediate area, he had stayed in Mullingar the previous night.
The knife was allegedly to be used in self-defence, the court heard, and the boy was not accompanied by a parent in court. He lives with his mother and brother.
Following a lengthy bail hearing, during which solicitor Patricia Cronin made strong representations on behalf of her young client, Judge David Anderson refused bail and remanded the teenager in St Patrick’s Institution for one week.
