A man who was driving his mother’s car and earned her a parking fine has been told it’s her responsibility for letting him drive the car.
Anthony Giles asked Judge Anderson if there was a way the conviction for failing to display a parking ticket could be recorded in his name, rather than the name of his mother, Maureen Giles of Greenhills, Killucan.
The car was registered to her when it was seen in Harbour Street carpark without a ticket on September 29, 2009.
However, Giles said he had been driving and became unwell at the parking meter.
He had put in a €1 coin which was rejected but felt unwell and moved away from the meter to be sick.
He said he believed he had done the right thing in moving away, but when he got back the ticket was in place.
Giles said he had tried to pay the fine online but the screen said that no payment was due. He showed a printout to the judge who noted it did not come from the day he had tried to pay but from the day he appeared before him.
“It’s your mother’s car, you owe her €40. She’s going to get a fine,” said the judge.
When Giles asked if the fine could be recorded against him, the judge said “She let you drive her car, that’s her responsibility”.
