Works are progressing well on the new Clonmore Bridge which will form the final link necessary to complete the Mullingar Orbital Road (C-Link ) and is on target to open to traffic in August 2010.
Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Cllr Fintan Cooney praised the efficiency and timeliness of the project.
“The new Clonmore Bridge will be the final major piece in the road infrastructure of Mullingar and will enable the town and county to offer itself more effectively as a serious place to do business, whilst improving the quality of life for the people of Mullingar,” he said.
The current phase of work comprises 540m of reinforced concrete bridge, carrying a two-lane road carriageway with footpaths and cycle-paths along each side.
The new bridge has 19 spans; each span contains nine pre-cast reinforced concrete beams, totalling 171 beams which have all been pre-cast on site. So far 162 of these have been lifted into their permanent positions. The bridge deck has been concreted on over half of the bridge, and the superstructure works are approximately 80 per cent completed
The new bridge crosses over the flood plain of the River Brosna and Lacy’s Canal. Where it crosses Lacy’s Canal, the bridge is high enough to allow boats to pass underneath.
The bridge will cost €12 million and is jointly funded by Westmeath County Council and the Department of Transport under the National Development Plan.
