Three men in their 20s have been charged with the robbery of more than €90,000 of rings from an Athlone jewellers.
Last Friday Mullingar District Court heard that none of the three Lithuanian nationals, who were arrested at Dublin Airport on Wednesday, have any assets, means, or permanent addresses in Ireland.
They had been here less than two weeks, hoping to get work, when the robbery took place at Angela Blacoe Jewellers, Mardyke Street Athlone on March 6.
Two women required medical attention after being sprayed with incapacitant spray during the robbery when 51 rings to the value of €93,871.25 from Theresa Carey were stolen.
Gytis Zienius (24 ), Egidijus Peciulis (29 ) and Ovidijus Rumba (29 ), all of whom have addresses in Lithuania were granted legal aid by Judge John Neilan.
Zienius, who lives at Prancuza, A 72 Kaunas is suffering with a cold, the court heard and Peciulis, who lives at Ranerin, 29 35 Joncua will need treatment for Hepatitis C while in custody.
When charged, both men disputed that the offence involved 51 rings, saying instead the total was 21.
Zienius replied “What 51 rings? there was only 21 rings,” when he was charged by Detective Garda Thomas Higgins.
Peciulis said “As to 51 rings, that's a big mistake, there was 21,” when he was charged by Detective Garda John Quinn.
Rumba, who has an address at Sarlsuvus 6 47, also in Kaunas, Lithuania, has no medical issues. He made no reply when charged.
No application for bail was made by solicitor Padraig Quinn and a Lithuanian interpreter was required for the bail hearing.
All were remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on March 19.
