“Hideous” and “deplorable” is how local councillors described the state of Athlone shopping centre (Texas centre ) this week as they called on the council executive to act to improve its derelict appearance.
“It is an eyesore - windows are broken and it is completely derelict. It is unfair on the people who attend St Mary’s church, the priests there, and the people of the town. We need to make it more presentable,” said Cllr Frankie Keena, who raised the issue at this week’s Athlone Area meeting.
“It is hideous and we need to either get tenants into it or tidy it up,” added Cllr Mark Cooney.
Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran suggested the centre’s developers be contacted regarding their plans for the site.
The council agreed to have the site examined by its planning enforcement section, with a view to having the development completed “in conformity with the permission granted”.
