The South Westmeath Hospice launched their annual fundraising event this week in AIT. The 5k Fun Run (or Walk ) takes place on Sunday April 18 and it starts on the track in AIT.
Speaking at the launch, chairman of the South Westmeath Hospice Dr Tony Lowry said “We had a very successful race last year and we raised around €25,000. This was in no small part due to the people who participated in the race and went out and asked their friends and neighbours for support. We are asking for their support again for this year. The race can be walked or run and it starts in AIT. The day itself is all about having fun and doing something for a good cause and we hope to see in excess of 500 people participating this year.”
Organiser of the Fun Run, Gordon Brett who is sports manager in AIT, said that participants have plenty of time to get ready between now and the race. “This race appeals to every level of participant from the walkers and joggers to the serious runners. We are hoping to create a big race atmosphere at what we hope is becoming a very special annual local event. The 5k will again finish on our international standard athletics track and this gives every participant the feeling of competing in the big time whatever their ability level. AIT AC is very proud of its relationship with the South Westmeath Hospice and we are very grateful to Calor Direct for its sponsorship this year,” he said.
The event is sponsored by AIT and Calor Direct. Local centre manager with Calor Direct, Fergal McGee, said “Calor Direct are delighted to sponsor the Athlone 5k. The South Westmeath Hospice will provide an excellent service to the people in the area and we are delighted to support such a fantastic charity which will provide great benefits to the community for many years to come.”
